老门东

Laomen Dong (老门东) in Nanjing, China was once home to wealthy merchants, aristocrats and artists. Now, a lovely recreational area sits upon it’s foundations bringing life back to ancient Chinese architecture. The street is filled with souvenirs and lovely cafes, including the New Zealand burger restaurant, Motu Burger—all set within stone buildings with black pointed roofs and hanging red lanterns. The end of the street runs right into the Ming City Wall upon which an enormous 3D light show is held some nights, covering the wall in a unique, interactive story.

Despite the Plum Rains Season, weather in Nanjing has remained fairly dry with a lovely cool breeze. The perfect weather to visit an outside museum and experience Chinese history! Nanjing was once the capital of China and still houses the one of the best-preserved buildings of modern Chinese architecture: the Presidential Palace (总统府). The palace has been renovated into a Modern History Museum, the biggest in China, and is a very important relic in recent Chinese history. Ori...ginating in the Ming Dynasty, this fascinating palace has witnessed a long history as a seat of political power—from housing a Ming princess, to the Heavenly King after the Taiping Rebellion, and eventually becoming office where Sun Yat-sen was inaugurated in 1911. The museum is a large outdoor court with many lovely gardens and 3 main areas where you can visit the offices where Sun Yat-sen once worked and royal families lived.
